Yoga On Tap

  • Lucky Dawgs Brewing 499 King's Road North Point, Hong Kong Island Hong Kong (map)

Taking the step to do your first-ever yoga class can be scary - I get it. I’ve been trying to convince my friends for ages to come practice with me with little success (*ahem* you know who you are) but the closest I’ve managed to get them to commit was when I taught two “beer yoga” events*, so I figured - why not tweak it and offer it as a regular monthly thing?

And thus, YOGA ON TAP was born.

I want to create an event that offers a casual environment for people to try/practice yoga in a non-intimidating space, where you feel like you’re sharing a fun experience with your friends, and are encouraged to stay and hang out after the class (with an optional craft beer tasting offered by Lucky Dawgs Brewing!). Yoga should be accessible for all, “on tap”.

WHEN? Every 3rd Sunday of the month (unless otherwise specified)
HOW MUCH? HK$180 for the class; HK$280 with craft beer tasting

*IS THIS BEER YOGA? YOU’RE BASTARDIZING YOGA.

While yes, Yoga On Tap involves both yoga and beer, it's most certainly NOT "beer yoga". Think of it more like a yoga social: you come and do an hour of yoga (..sure, in the middle of a brewery), then *after* class you have the option (so if you don't drink alcohol, that's fine too! You have a choice!) to order a craft beer tasting generously supplied by the good folk at Lucky Dawgs Brewing in good company and camaraderie.

In case that’s not clear: NO, there will be no drinking involved during the class, and no, I don’t condone “beer yoga” as a real yoga practice. But I do think that it’s a friendly, fun way to get people together, and if this is the thing that kickstarts their yoga journey (we all come to yoga for different reasons, for me it was wanting to do cool ass poses, which is I suppose "healthier" but still not the purest of reasons), that’s a good thing, right?

IF I COME TO THIS, I DON'T NEED TO GO TO A STUDIO THEN, RIGHT?

Um, no. Yoga On Tap is meant to be a community event where you can get-together with your friends and share a collective experience together, not a cheap replacement for a serious yoga practice if that's what you're after, just like how you wouldn't go to a group workout in the park if you want specific training results. This is not the place to get technical and learn proper alignment (although when I teach I use a lot of alignment cues), for that I highly recommend going to a yoga studio class or investing in private sessions with a teacher. It's also the reason why this event only happens once a month, not weekly.

HOW IS THIS EVENT "ON TAP"?

Yoga classes on the regs can be a huge commitment on multiple levels, especially if you’ve never tried it before or have done a few classes but don’t know if you like it enough yet. I want to offer a way for anyone and everyone to experience the benefits of yoga, as it’s really why I got into teaching and why I’m such a yoga-pusher (as some of my friends would describe me).

Well, then there’s also the wordplay since, you know, brewery, beer on tap..

BUT I'VE NEVER DONE YOGA BEFORE.. AM I TOO INFLEXIBLE/UNFIT/[insert excuse] FOR THIS?

First off, there’s no such thing as being too inflexible for yoga - it’s like saying you’re too dirty to shower, okay. Sure, the person next to you might look like a human pretzel in comparison, but everyone has to start somewhere. Regardless of your age, gender, body type, shape, size and level, anyone can do yoga. Plus, trust me when I say that even the most bendy person has their own physical struggles - I can attest to this from personal experience, and nobody has a perfect practice.

CAN I BRING MY FRIENDS?

YES, OF COURSE! The main reason why I collaborated with Lucky Dawgs Brewing for this was so that even non-yogis might feel compelled to join! Bring your friends, your partner, your parents, anyone in your life who you think might enjoy this. If you’ve been trying to convince someone in your life to give yoga a go and know that the promise of beer after class will get them to change their mind, this might just be your way in :)
